Peat

The Peatland formation and peat accumulation factors combination is not the same in different regions of Belarus, therefore the peatland sizes, peat deposits, peat stocks of various types and territories of general swamping are essentially different. Peatland occupies 2,939,000 ha, or 14.2% of the total area of Belarus. The Belorussian experts classify mires depending on the water-mineral nutrition conditions and the growing vegetation. There are three mire types depending on these criteria: low-moor (eutrophic or fen), transitional (mesotrophic or poor fen) and high-moor (oligothrophic or bog).

The low type peat deposit area in Belarus makes up 81.6% (2,103,800 ha), transitional is around 3.4% (106,200 ha), the high one consists of 15.0% (333,700 ha).

In 2021 the export of Belarusian peat reached 20.8M USD, making it the 13th largest exporter of peat in the world. In the same year the peat was the 226th most exported product in Belarus. The partners which import peat are as follows: Poland ($6.22M), the Czech Republic($3.01M), Lithuania ($2.69M), Russia ($2.12M) and Ukraine ($2.03M). The fastest growing export markets for the Belarusian peat between 2020 and 2021 were Poland ($4.17M), the Czech Republic ($1.04M) and Romania ($686k).

The peat ensures plants protected against parasites and pathogens as well as ensures constant feeding through nutrients and maintenance of the optimum soil acidity, proper aeration of roots. All these contribute to higher yields of crops.

The technological process for the production of peat products consists of the following stages:
  • 1 Transportation by railway to the receiving bin.
  • 2 Feeding to the inclined conveyor through a metal trap to the separation line.
  • 3 Separation by a pre-separator for screening out wood inclusions and permafrost.
  • 4 Separation (division of peat into fractions 0-7mm, 0-10mm, 0-40mm, 7- 15mm, 15-30mm, 20-40mm)
  • 5 Loading from the mixing drum into the bin for its further packing (Big Bale,5L,10L,20L,55L,100L,250L packages).
  • 6 Pressing and packing on peat packing lines with automatic presses.
  • 7 Warehousing, storage and shipping.
